Headshots – What to Wear?

Jul 31, 2024

If you’re a law firm partner and you’ve just scheduled new headshots – what should you wear?

This question comes up fairly often. The answer may surprise you.

Dress the way you would when you go to see a client.

And that doesn’t have to mean a suit and tie.

Some types of lawyers, especially litigators who are frequently in court or those who serve Fortune 100 corporate clients, may be best served by wearing something more formal. However, it’s not a requirement.

If your clients wear t-shirts and jeans to work, you might reconsider showing up in a suit and tie, even in a photo.

The bottom line is – consider your clients’ corporate culture when deciding what you want to wear.

Here are a few more tips to get the most out of your time with the photographer:

🧩Don’t just opt for one headshot. Take advantage of your time with them, and get multiple photo options – different clothes, outside, in a conference room, a standard headshot.

🧩Organize some photos that include different groupings of law firm partners, associates and staff, and consider using those for your website instead of stock photography to make it feel more branded and personalized to your firm.

🧩With that said – be aware of the rules for your state bar about appropriate use of photos on your law firm’s website. For example, in New York State, if you use stock photography on your website showing people’s faces, you must put a disclaimer on your website that these people are not actual lawyers.
